Electric Vehicle Maintenance Costs
Electric Vehicle Maintenance Costs
The world around us is transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). If you’re considering making the jump to electric, it’s vital to understand electric vehicle maintenance costs so you know what to expect when you need to bring your car to Andy Mohr CDJR’s service center.
The needs of an EV differ from those of traditional gas-powered vehicles—and more than ever, knowledge is power. Whether you’re in Indianapolis, Avon, or Bloomington, IL, we’re here to help you find your footing. Contact us to learn more.
Are EVs Cheaper to Maintain?
EVs generally require less maintenance than traditional non-electric vehicles. This is because EVs lack many components that typically need repair or replacement in gas vehicles. For example, EVs don’t use exhaust systems, fuel injectors, or spark plugs, which greatly reduces the cost of repairs and translates to lower maintenance expenses over the EV's lifespan.
Most EVs also include regenerative braking systems, which work to extend the life of brake pads. Even so, it’s essential to note that while routine maintenance costs may be lower, the cost of specific repairs, particularly those involving battery replacement, can be higher.
What Kind of Maintenance Do EVs Need?
EVs still need regular maintenance to ensure that they are running at their optimal performance. Standard EV maintenance typically involves tire rotations, brake checks, and software updates. Tires wear out at an equivalent rate to those used in internal combustion vehicles and, therefore, need regular rotation and eventual replacement services.
Although brake systems are less frequently used because of regenerative braking, they still need periodic inspections to ensure safety. Similarly, software updates should be completed routinely to ensure battery efficiency throughout its lifetime.
Lastly, an EVs coolant system must be periodically checked for top-offs to ensure the temperature of the battery and electronics stays down, which will bless it with good health and efficient service.
